Why a pair beats a sheet of six
Six-up is the default because it saves paper. It also shrinks every square to about thirteen millimetres, which is fine for copying clues and cramped for writing candidates. Two-up spends the same A4 sheet on two grids of about twenty millimetres, which is the size at which a medium or hard puzzle can actually be annotated without turning each cell into a smear.
The second grid is not a spare decoration. A puzzle worked in pen is finished the first time a digit is wrong, and the usual move is to start the evening over. Having the clues already waiting on the lower half of the same page means the restart costs a minute of recopying, not a trip back to the screen.
Classroom pairs use the same layout for a different reason. Two students sharing a desk can take one grid each without a second print, and the squares stay large enough that a teacher walking the aisle can read the work from a step away.
What two-up actually measures
On A4 with a twelve-millimetre margin, stacking the two grids gives a cell of roughly twenty millimetres. Side by side they would drop back toward newspaper size, which is why this page stacks them rather than splitting the width. The print stylesheet forces a single column so a browser cannot quietly revert to a two-across sheet.
Twenty millimetres holds a digit and three or four corner marks without collision. That is the difference between a puzzle you can reason on paper and a puzzle you can only stare at. If you need still more room — a demonstration on a desk, or eyes that want a larger mark — the one-grid sheet is the next step down this family.
The box rules still print heavier than the cell rules. Two large grids make that more important, not less: at this size a faint 3×3 border is a grid you have to re-find every time your eye leaves it.
How to use the spare grid
Copy the clues onto both boxes before you start, then work only the top one. If a placement goes wrong you already have a clean board with the same givens; you are not reconstructing the puzzle from memory or from a phone that has locked itself.
Or leave the lower box empty and treat it as a composition pad. Fill a valid complete grid there first, then strip clues one at a time and check uniqueness in the solver after each removal. That is how a handmade puzzle stays a Sudoku rather than a grid with two answers.
